Mustangs in hunt: Northside Christian is in third place with a team score of 323 after Tuesday's first round at the girls golf state championships at Ridgewood Lakes Golf and County Club in Davenport. The Mustangs are 12 shots behind St. Stephen's and 23 off leader American Heritage's pace.

"American Heritage is every bit as good as advertised," Mustangs coach 'D.J. Jackson' said.

Weather turned a bit ugly in the afternoon. St. Stephen's teed off at 8 a.m. and got some holes in before a storm rolled in.

"They probably got like six or seven holes in before it got nasty," Jackson said. "It got pretty rough out there on a very difficult course to begin with."

Northside's 'A.J. Newell 'and 'Michelle Butler' carded 79, while 'Morgan Jackson' shot 82. But its Nos. 4 and 5 shot 95 and 99, respectively.

Girls golf: Mustangs trio gets job done
By JOE SMITH
Published October 24, 2007

TAMPA - Northside Christian golf coach D.J. Jackson said if his "big three" are on, the Mustangs are tough to top. There are freshmen A.J. Newell and Michelle Butler, whom Jackson calls "plodders," calmly consistent and savvy with each stroke.  And there's steady senior Morgan Jackson, a seven-year varsity player whom Jackson said is often forgotten compared with the freshman phenoms.

The trio lived up to its billing Tuesday at The Eagles, leading the Mustangs 327 to their fourth straight region championship. Runnerup Berkeley Prep (362) will join Northside on Oct. 30 and 31 at the state tournament in Davenport; it's the Mustangs' sixth straight finals berth.

"It's amazing," said Newell, the individual champion at 75. "Everyone stepped up. Most teams go from a 75, 80 to 90s and 100s, but we've got four strong girls." The Mustangs' "big three" - Newell (75), Jackson (79) and Butler (80) - all topped the Bucs top tandem of junior twins Kyleen (81) and Kim Carpenter (83).

As for the Mustangs, state champions in 2004, they'll need more than a big performance from their big three next week to repeat the feat. There's their No. 4, Anna Newell, who shot 93 Tuesday. "I think top four or so (at state) is a good goal," D.J. Jackson said. "But you never know."

Freshman Michelle Butler shot her second 34 of the season, finishing with a pair of birdies. Fellow freshman A.J. Newell recorded a 36 and senior Morgan Jackson a 37. Sixth-graders Anna Newell and Danielle Grace shot 44.

Mustangs remain on top
By DOUG KATES
Published October 16, 2007

PALM HARBOR - Though this was her first district tournament, Northside Christian freshman Michelle Buttler insists she was not feeling any pressure Monday at Tarpon Woods Country Club in the Class A, District 15 tournament.

"Today I kind of went out there and just relaxed," Buttler said. "I was hitting my irons good to the green and I had good miss hits."

Buttler fired four birdies en route to even-par 72. A.J. Newell was second with 77. Together, they helped Northside (321) win its fourth straight team title. Indian Rocks Christian (389) took second. IRC's Ryan Ashburn fired 78 for third individually. Clearwater Central Catholic (494) was third. Also moving on was Admiral Farragut's Kelly Robash.

Northside Christian was the last Pinellas County school to win a state championship, accomplishing the feat in 2004. This year? "We should be okay," Northside Christian coach D.J. Jackson said with a chuckle. ¶ "I've got three girls who could all possibly win the 1A state title."
