Volleyball: Size aids Northside's win

ST. PETERSBURG - A question always up for debate is: Does size really matter? Thursday, it certainly did. Northside Christian used its marked size advantage, defeating Keswick Christian 25-15, 25-20, 25-15 in a tidy 59 minutes to win the district title for the first time since 2002.
"Our size makes a big difference," Northside coach Holly Filer said. "We don't run into too many teams that can match up with us in the middle."
Featuring a pair of 6-foot-plus middle hitters (Kayla Walton and Jennica Mullins), Northside dominated at the net all night. Walton finished with 12 kills and five blocks, while Mullins had eight kills.
"This is such an amazing feeling," Walton said. "But I couldn't have done anything without great setting and great passing from my teammates."
Walton's dominance was best demonstrated in Game 2. Trailing 5-1, Walton hammered three straight balls through the middle of Keswick's defense. Callie Hasko (eight kills) then served a pair of aces, followed by another Walton spike. When the runended, the Mustangs led 10-5.
"We've been looking forward to this all season," Hasko said. "I love my school and the fact our fans all showed up tonight to support us. It's indescribable."

Volleyball: Time to dig deep

Coach Holly Filer's introduction to Northside Christian volleyball in 2002 couldn't have been better. The Mustangs won the district title and reached the region final in their coach's first year.
Since then?
"We've had a pretty rough stretch," Filer said.
This season, however, has been anything but "rough." Filer has guided the Mustangs to a 19-5 record and perfect 6-0 district mark. And Northside will look to add another district championship to the trophy case when the Class 2A, District 11 tourney opens Tuesday at Shorecrest.
"Honestly, I think we have a more well-rounded team than (2002)," Filer said. "We run a faster offense at a faster pace. And we have more firepower."
The Mustangs are green - there are no seniors in a starting lineup that features four sophomores - but Filer is not shy about her team's chances.
"Yes, you can tell how excited I am about this team," she said. "We're young, but I'm stressing to the girls not to look forward to next year. Our challenge is to make it happen this year."
Filer said it was during the summer at the University of Tampa when the team began to take shape. Northside beat rival Indian Rocks Christian and Tampa Prep in a one-game format, and Filer said the experience was invaluable.
"Even though it wasn't a full match, they saw that they can do it," she said. "I saw it in them. The girls came together, and I draw a lot of my energy from them."
