Life Science

Living things and their environments

  • Plants and animals live in environments to which they are suited
  • Different habitats (forests, meadows, deserts) and their inhabitants
  • Food chain
  • Characteristics of oceans (Salt water, currents, landscape of the ocean floor)
  • Great diversity of ocean life (tiny plankton, giant whales)
  • Effects of habitat destruction (pollution)

The Human Body

  • Overview of major body systems (skeletal, digestive, circulatory) and their basic parts(skull, stomach, heart)
  • What germs and diseases are, and preventing illness (importance of vaccinations)

Science - Physical Science

Matter

  • Idea that everything is made of matter
  • Basic concept of atoms; all matter is made up of parts too small to see
  • Three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas
  • Measuring properties of matter (in units such as centimeters, quarts)

Introduction to Electricity

  • Introduction to static electricity
  • Basic parts of simple electrical circuits (battery, wires, bulb, switch)
  • Difference between conductive and nonconductive materials
  • Safety rules for electricity (never touch a switch with wet hands)

Earth Science

Astronomy

  • Basic structure of the solar system (sun and nine planets)
  • Phases of the moon (full, half, crescent, new)
  • Earth’s place in the solar system (orbits the sun, rotates on axis every 24 hours)

Earth

  • Geographical features of the earth’s surface (continents, poles, equator)
  • Inside the earth (temperatures high enough to melt rocks)
  • Volcanoes and geysers
  • Introduction to some different rocks and minerals

Math

Patterns and Classification

  • More practice … classifying … size, shape, fraction
  • Define sets by shared attributes of its numbers
  • Identify items that belong or do not belong in a set
  • Recognize and extend patters ( 2,4, 6, 8 …)

Numbers and Number sense

  • Write, read, and count 0 – 100
  • Count by 2, 5, 10
  • Count forwards and backward
  • Identify ordinal position 1st – 10th
  • Learn place value ones, 10s, 100s
  • Use more or less
  • Use compared quantities <, >, =
  • Learn simple fractions ½, 1/3, ¼
  • Make and read simple picture graphs and bar graphs

Money

  • Read, write amounts using dollars, cents and decimal points
  • Show different amounts of coins = same amounts of money

Computation

  • Learn addition and subtraction facts to 12
  • Study the inverse relation between addition and subtraction
  • Add and subtract 2 digit numbers
  • Solve one step story and picture problems
  • Sole simple equations ( __ + 2 = 7, 5 - __ = 3)

Measurement

  • Take simple measurements (length, weight, volume, temperature)
  • Practice measuring in standard units (inches, centimeters, pounds)
  • Tell time to the half hour

Geometry

  • Identify and draw basic figures (square, rectangle, triangle, circle)
  • Identify basic solid figures (sphere, cube, cone )
  • Terms describing location

Language Arts

Reading

In addition to kindergarten objectives,

  • Continue phonics work; count the syllables in a word, identify letter sounds in word, blend letter sounds to make words
  • Sound out short words
  • Apply reading strategies to unfamiliar words when reading
  • Recognize common sight words
  • Read simple stories and beginning reader books – silently and aloud
  • Predict what will happen in stories and later discuss whether prediction was right
  • Discuss who, what, when, where, how, why, and what-if questions about readings
  • Read and understand simple instructions
  • Read aloud with someone outside of school at least ten minutes daily

Literature

  • Read and listen to poems
  • Read and listen to stories, including fables fairy tales, and legends
  • Learn some folk tales from around the world
  • Learn some basic literary terms (character, hero, and heroine)
  • Read and listen to nonfiction prose (history books, books about art)
  • Take part in a class play
  • Learn some conventions and terms of drama (actors, scenery, props, and stage)
  • Practice telling and writing their own stories

Other Language Arts

  • Spell words dictated by teacher
  • Correctly spell short words
  • Learn simple spelling rules reflected in phonics
  • Capitalize the first word of a sentence, names of people, and pronoun “I”
  • Use periods, questions marks, and exclamation points at ends of sentences
  • Make words plural by adding s

Writing

In addition to kindergarten objectives,

  • Practice writing brief compositions, narrative and expository
  • Learn the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing).
  • Proper capitalization, proper end punctuation, proper use of spaces between words, and correct spelling of word wall words.
  • Write a paragraph with a beginning, middle and an end, using detailed sentences

Technology

  • Mouse Basics Review
  • Computer Basics – Working online (supervised), following computer rules, lab rules
  • Introduction to additional keys on the keyboard
  • Introduction to touch-typing (second semester)
  • Publisher Introduction
  • Internet websites using classroom topics
