Science

Life Science

Plants and Plant Growth

  • What plants need to grow (sufficient warmth, light, water)
  • Basic parts of plants (seed, root, stem, leaf, and flower)
  • Plants make their own food
  • How some food comes from farms as crops

Animals and Their Needs

  • What animals need to live (food, water, and space)
  • How animals get food (eat plants or other living things)
  • Offspring are very much like their parents
  • Special needs of animal babies
  • Taking care of pets

Human Body

  • Using the five senses
  • Taking care of your body (exercise, cleanliness, healthy foods, rest)

Physical Science

Introduction to Magnetism

  • Every day uses of magnets (cabinet locks, refrigerator magnets)
  • Classifying materials as attracted or not attracted by magnets

Earth Science

Seasons and Weather

  • The four seasons
  • Observing daily weather changes (temperature, clouds, and rainfall)
  • The sun as our source of light and warmth

Taking Care of the Earth

  • The need to conserve natural resources
  • Ways to recycle and save energy (turning off unnecessary lights)
  • Examples of pollutions (littering, smog)

Math

Patterns and Classification

  • Sort, classify object (size, shape, color…)
  • Recognize – sets of objects
  • Items that belong / don’t belong
  • Simple patterns ( shape, size, color…)

Numbers and Number sense

  • Same as , less than, more than, most and least
  • Count, read write numbers 1 – 31
  • Count by 2s, 5s and 10s  > 50
  • Backward from 10
  • Count, write objects in a set
  • “Tell one more than” or “one less than”
  • Identify position 1st – 6th
  • Be able to interpret simple picture graphs
  • Identify ½ of an object or region

Money

  • Learn to recognize coins … 1,5, 10, 25, 50
  • Know the signs for cents, and dollars ($)

Computation

  • Add and subtract numbers  ( 1 – 10 )
  • Learn signs for addition ( + ) and subtraction ( - )

Measurement

  • Identify instruments of measuring  ( ruler, yard stick, scale, thermometer)
  • Take part in simple measuring and weighing
  • Tell differences in objects  - taller, shorter, heavier, lighter
  • Practice in orienting in time … (morning, afternoon, tomorrow, next week)
  • Tell time to the hour and half hour
  • Days of the week / months of the year

Geometry

  • Left hand and right hand
  • Terms of orientation ( top, bottom, on, under, front and behind)
  • Identify and compare basic plane figures ( square, triangle, circle)

Language Arts

Reading

  • Recognize and name the letters of the alphabet
  • Begin phonics:  learn that letters represent sound; identify letter sound; identify words that rhyme; orally blend sounds to make words; break words into syllables; identify the beginning and ending sounds of short spoken words, etc.
  • Begin to read some short words
  • Begin to recognize common words by sight
  • Read some simple phrases or sentences
  • Tell what happened after listening to stories; predict what will happen next
  • Practice distinguishing reality from fantasy in stories
  • Listen to and follow oral directions
  • Read aloud with someone outside of school at least ten minutes daily

Literature

  • Learn basic story parts (title, beginning and end)
  • Listen to and join in saying short poems ( Mother Goose)
  • Listen to stories, fables, and legends
  • Listen to nonfiction prose
  • Tell and “write” their own stories (by drawing pictures, telling stories to teachers, while she writes them down)
  • Learn some basic literary terms (author, illustrator)

Writing

  • Learn to write own name
  • Write all letters of the alphabet (upper and lower case)
  • Use sound-letter knowledge to write simple words and messages
  • Write a sentence using a capital, correct punctuation, and proper spacing

Technology

  • Mouse Basics - Select, Drag, Click and Double-click
  • Computer Basics – Working online (supervised), following computer rules, lab rules
  • Websites will compliment classroom subjects
  • Computer parts and devices
  • Introduction to keyboard
  • Beginning Graphics
  • Drawing with shapes and lines
