Mr. James McBride

Greetings! I’m Mr. James McBride, and I've been teaching 6th grade Reading and Language at Northside Christian School since 2014. I began my professional career in teaching English and Theatre at the high school level in 1989. I took a ministry tangent for 20+ years doing student ministry across Florida, Kentucky, and for 10 years here in Pinellas County. Returning to teaching, I taught 6th grade English for a year in the inner city in the  public school system before finding Northside. My wife, Barbara, have been blissfully married since 1991, and we have three children. Our youngest, Megan, graduated from Northside in 2016 and is now a nurse at John Hopkins All Children's Hospital.

The theme of my classroom is adventure.  I love adventure in all forms.  I love reading because it takes my mind on adventures through time and space.  I love physical adventures like white water rafting and disc golf.  I love musical adventures from stirring classical symphonies to modern musical theater.  But, most of all, I love the adventure we have in following after Jesus.  He leads us to places we would never think to go and challenges us to do things we would never envision doing.  I want to bring those elements of adventure into the classroom.

I love language arts, and I believe that reading and writing should be an adventure.  We will be exploring great works of literary arts this year. Students will read pieces by Yeats, Shakespeare, O’Henry,  C.S. Lewis, and others. We will cover mysteries with Sherlock Holmes, historical fiction with The Bronze Bow and Bud, Not Buddy, and many other genres as students explore. We will write daily in a journal as we explore different composition styles and techniques. We will use elements of our grammar and vocabulary studies as we write to build up our literary muscles. We will also write in many formats including poetry, short stories, letters, essays, and research papers.

I will be giving weekly written homework in addition to their daily at home reading. Homework assignments will be posted on Planbook (Link on main page) as well as posted on the whiteboard in the classroom. Students will be expected to read 150 minutes per week outside of class and keep a log of their reading for their AR goal.

Faith has a significant role in our education at Northside, and we will explore aspects of faith in and through our daily work. My goal is to help shape young hearts and minds to become stronger images of our creative, wise, and loving Lord.  If you need to reach me, the best way is to contact me through my school email.
